Dirt can destroy your computer
Believe it or not, dirt and debris can destroy your computer! The buildup of dust or hair can short circuit the components inside your computer, heat build up inside dirty parts can cause irreparable damage to circuitry, fan bearings can fail, and so much more. The computer pictured to the left needed over $300 in repairs due to dust accumulation damaging multiple components. Computers live and die based on how clean they are inside. It’s inevitable, you will have dust build up inside your computer, but there are a few things you can do to help slow down the buildup of dust.
A few things you can do:
1. Don’t keep your computer tower on the floor.
Whether you have carpet or tile floors, keeping your computer just a few inches off the floor greatly reduces the amount of dust that gets sucked into it by the system fans
2. Keep a clean house.
I know that sounds silly, and everyone’s definition of clean is different, but regular dusting, sweeping and/or vacuuming can make a huge difference in the amount of available dirt and debris that could enter your computer.
3. No pets.
Of course I would never suggest getting rid of a member of the family to keep your computer clean, however if you have your computer in a separate room, consider making it a pet free zone. Hair is a big “short circuit-er” of electronics. Not everyone has that ability, so keep that in mind and increase how often you consider an internal cleaning of your computer.
4. No smoking.
The tar in cigarette smoke sticks to everything, not just your lungs. It mixes with the dust inside your computer and makes for a thick brown paste that increases the internal temperature of components, and destroys fan bearings. If you’re a smoker and if you can quit, do it, you’ll thank yourself. If you can’t or don’t want to quit, you might consider smoking outside, or only on an enclosed porch. Of course I can’t tell you what to do in the comfort of your home, so, if you do smoke, consider increasing how often you have your computer cleaned.
You should consider having the inside of your computer cleaned once a year at a minimum. If you smoke or have pets, you should try to have it done at least every 6 months, and if both of these apply to you, you should consider every 3 months.
If you have a dirty computer, bring it in and we can clean it! Most desktop computers can be cleaned within 30 minutes, and most laptops within 1 hour. $65 or less can save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars to repair what cleaning could have prevented.
